Frequently Asked Questions

  • What types of pumps are best for milk foaming?

Gear pumps featuring stainless steel housings are optimal for their capacity to incorporate and blend air, resulting in foam production. The choice of stainless steel for the housing is essential due to its resistance to the acidic nature of milk.

  • When would I need to use a pump with an integrated strainer?

Whenever there is a risk of contaminants or suspended particles in the liquid system supplied to a standard vane pump, it is advisable to use a strainer to prevent these particles from damaging the pump's internal carbon components. Particles larger than a grain of sand, or approximately 125 microns, could harm the internal components of the pump. An integral strainer is highly effective at capturing these uncommon, larger particulates. However, smaller particles may still pass through the strainer's mesh, potentially reducing the lifespan of your PROCON Vane Pump.

  • What is centipoise (cP)? How does it help to determine what pump to use?

Centipoise is a unit used to measure a liquid's viscosity, indicating that a higher centipoise value corresponds to a more viscous liquid. For example, water has a viscosity of 1-3 centipoises, motor oil ranges from 200 to 500 centipoises, and molasses falls between 5,000 and 10,000 centipoises. Standard Vane and Micro Vane Pumps are suitable for liquids up to 100 centipoises, while Gear Pumps can handle liquids with viscosities up to 20,000 centipoises.

  • Can I adjust the pressure on my relief valve?

If you have a rotary vane pump, the answer is yes, and they commonly are adjusted throughout the life of the pump as the internal components wear in over time. Please find the proper procedure for doing so on the website (deadheading the pump into a liquid filled pressure gauge and t-handle valve, etc.) But for gear pumps, the desired operating pressure is determined and set before the pump leaves the factory and should not be tampered.
